MADRID, 26 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The coach of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, assured that they must “defend better” for the second leg of the semifinals of the Champions League against Manchester City and highlighted the “cold head and maturity” of his players in difficult moments when start of the tie.
“We have been in the game until the end, but we have to defend better. With the ball we have done well but for the second leg we have to defend better, this will be very important at the Bernabéu. In recent times we have conceded goals but we have put a lot of energy playing open games”, analyzed Ancelotti.
“It could also be that the rivals get ahead on the scoreboard and this could be a sign that when the games are open we are better at it. In the second leg it is clear, if we defend better we win and if we don’t we may stay out”, pointed out the Real Madrid coach, who cannot rate the result positively. “When you lose it’s never good, but yes, this game was very different from PSG’s in the first leg,” he recalled.
In this sense, Ancelotti vindicated his own. “We have scored three goals, we have competed and we have fought. It is quite simple to read this game. We were very dangerous with the ball, I have a totally different feeling than the game in Paris,” the Italian said at a press conference.
“It’s a defeat that keeps us alive for the Bernabéu. We have enough quality to hurt the rival in the second leg”, but he did admit to experiencing “a little frustration”. “In the first half we lost many duels, they scored two goals against us and I think that with a little more attention they could have been avoided,” he added.
“But then we have reacted and now we are alive for the return leg. The team has experience and although the moment is difficult, it never loses its head, nor does it lower its arms. Always with a cool head,” said Ancelotti, who highlighted Karim Benzema’s performance , who played well “as always”.
“Karim played a great game, as always, he also had the personality to take the penalty. He took it spectacularly. We never thought of changing the taker because of his mistakes. This shot surprised me a bit, I didn’t know how I was going to shoot”, admitted the man from Reggiolo, who justified the change of Modric to put “a fresh player” with Ceballos, who “had a lot of personality” in those 10 minutes.
Finally, Ancelotti believes that both Alaba and Casemiro will be in for the second leg and admitted that it will be “very difficult for us to see a similar match for the second leg”. “They have the advantage but it is not a great advantage. We hope that — our fans, who demand that we play better — will allow us to reach the final. The fans have to be ready because we are going to fight for another magical night.” he finished.
