An American in Gaza calls on Washington to evacuate him and his family

An American citizen residing in Gaza appealed to his country’s authorities to remove him and his family from the Strip after they were exposed to an Israeli bombing, in which he was injured along with two members of his family and his sister was killed as a result.

Youssef Abdel Aziz Abu Shaaban (18 years old), a Palestinian with American citizenship, was transferred by ambulance crews to Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza to receive treatment after suffering moderate injuries in various parts of his body as a result of the Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip.

Youssef, who is now in the hospital, said: “The area where I live was subjected to Israeli bombing in Tal al-Hawa in Gaza, which led to the injury of me and my family members.”

He continued to Anatolia: “We are civilians and were subjected to Israeli bombardment with many missiles.”

He added: “I call on the American embassy to evacuate me and my family from the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.”

He pointed out that “the embassy asked us last Saturday to go to the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, but we waited for a long time without being evacuated.”

He added: “We went to a UNRWA school, but the school was unsanitary and there were no food supplies.”

He added: “We went to Gaza City and were bombed there in the area where I live without any warning.”

He continued: “My passport was stained with my blood. What did I do? This is considered a disgrace to my country because they cannot protect me.”

During the bombing, Youssef was injured, his sister Jude (14 years old) was killed, and two members of his family were injured, his father and sister Jihan (8 years old), he said.

Youssef is the only one in his family who holds American citizenship. He was born in the United States and stayed there for two years before moving to live in Gaza.

** Americans stuck in Gaza

Hundreds of stranded Americans are now waiting in Gaza, awaiting the opening of the Rafah land crossing (south), which connects Gaza to Egypt, in order to evacuate them.

A few days ago, the New York Times highlighted the suffering of Americans of Palestinian origin who are under Israeli bombing, especially since their number is estimated at 500 to 600 American citizens in Gaza, according to the newspaper.

“Many of them are in contact with US officials seeking to leave Gaza amid a barrage of Israeli air strikes,” she said.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby previously stated, “The Israeli blockade currently prevents the American government from transferring its citizens out of Gaza.”

He added that the White House is holding talks with Israel and Egypt regarding safe passage for civilians out of Gaza, including Americans, but no progress has been achieved.

For the thirteenth day, the Israeli army continues to launch intensive raids on Gaza, and is currently preparing to carry out a ground attack on the Strip, which was preceded by calls to empty the northern region of its population, which is estimated at about one million people.

The world is now watching with caution and concern the developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip, which has prompted Western governments to mobilize support for Israel, amid fears that the already disastrous situation will worsen if Tel Aviv carries out its ground operation.

As of Thursday, the death toll from the Israeli war on Gaza reached 3,785 martyrs, including 1,524 children, 1,000 women, and 120 elderly people, according to the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.
