Albares will travel to Rabat on April 1: “The complete normalization of connections with Spain is on the agenda”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has announced that he will officially travel to Rabat on April 1 and will deal with “the complete normalization of connections with Spain, including maritime connections and Operation Crossing the Strait”. This was stated this Wednesday in the branch commission, where he appeared at his own request to explain Pedro Sánchez’s change of position, on behalf of the Government, regarding Western Sahara.

“We cannot afford the luxury that the foundations of our relationship with a partner and neighbor like Morocco rest on shaky ground.” “It was essential to enter a new stage in which the possibility of new crises recedes until it disappears”, have been some of the expressions verbalized by the head of Foreign Affairs to justify the historic turn in foreign policy by which Spain abandons its position of active neutrality in the conflict, a decision that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has taken without consulting his government partners, United We Can, or the rest of the parliamentary groups.

As he explained, after the statement leaked last Friday by the Moroccan Royal House, through which Spain recognizes the autonomy proposal for the Sahara, “a new stage is opened that will be developed on a clear and ambitious roadmap, for the benefit of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Spain, of our stability and prosperity”.

Within the pending agenda to design together with his Moroccan counterpart, before Sánchez’s visit to Rabat, Albares has indicated that “the reestablishment, in a controlled manner, of the movement of people and goods” between the two countries will be addressed.

“Spain has been a spectator of Western Sahara for too many years. Today there is a great opportunity to take an active part in its resolution”, praised the Foreign Minister, as he also did during the control session with the Government on Wednesday morning , despite the fact that Spain continues to be the administering power of this territory occupied by Morocco 46 years ago.

In this sense, he has reiterated that the change of position is not a novelty, but a continuation of the support given by the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to the Moroccan plans since 2008, since he has highlighted the “end of the crisis” with the neighboring country with the aim of “defending the interests of Spain, promoting its prosperity and guaranteeing its security”.
